Complete makeover with composite decking and fencing

The client

A homeowner in Erwood in Powys, Wales, who wanted to give their uniquely-positioned outdoor space a new lease of life.

What they needed

We were contacted by this particular customer to revamp their entire back garden. The space comprised a large timber decking area that was rotting in places and a smaller, tired-looking slabbed patio section.

Bamboo fence panels were used on one side to provide privacy. However, while they may have looked decorative, they were far from robust and would have needed to be replaced in the foreseeable future.

The challenges

The actual positioning of the outdoor space posed a major challenge in itself, with half of it being elevated four metres above ground level. As a result, we effectively had to remove the old decking and construct and install brand new decking and fencing – up in the air, which was no small feat.

At the same time, we also had to make sure the new frame, which fitted over the old frame, was exactly the same height as the patio area. This enabled the new decking to seamlessly run over the new frames and ensured there was adequate drainage.

“This particular project was incredibly challenging due to the fact we weren’t working at ground level, which made safely installing the decking structure extremely difficult,” explains our Director, David.

“However, we pride ourselves on providing bespoke solutions for all types of outdoor space-related challenges, no matter how complex they may be, which is precisely what we did for this particular customer.”

Our solution

We stripped off the old decking, which exposed the original elevated frame, and replaced all of the rotten support timbers. This made sure the existing frame was structurally sound and able to take the weight of the new frame and decking, as well as the associated fixings.

Once the existing frame had been fully repaired, we overlaid it with a new 6m x 2m timber frame that covered the old patio area. Both this and the new 4m x 2m frame had to seamlessly run into each other while also incorporate a fall for drainage.

A total of 98 lengths of Escoscape Clarity Decking Boards in graphite were fitted across the entire garden area, which was neatly finished off with matching trims, fascias and fixings.

We then fitted 90 Durapost composite fencing panels in anthracite grey to the edge of the frame, which made sure the decking and fencing seamlessly blended together for a highly attractive and professional end result.

The end result

What was once a tired and worn outdoor space has been instantly transformed into a contemporary focal point.

Our customer Sylvia Jones said about the installation:

This was not a straightforward job – raised decking and fencing in mid-air! Greenspace Living tackled the challenges and were able to address the particular issues that the site presented with enthusiasm, expertise and good humour throughout.

“They had amazing attention to detail and were very professional and excellent at explaining what was happening throughout the process. They also left the site very clean and tidy at the end of each day.”
